Surviving the Civil War Homefront
Friday, November 28, 2008 (253 reads)

January 10 (10am-4pm) - 11 (1-4pm), 2009

To the soldier in the field, home became at times an imaginary place; one perhaps unaffected by war, happy and peaceful. But though not always faced with bullets and shells, the families of soldiers fought battles at home just as desperate. The situations they faced varied from family to family, from location to location, from year to year. The fear and uncertainty , however, would have been a constant for both free and enslaved Southerners.

TREK Bicycle Store of Charlotte Opens as First Trek Location in NC to Incorporate Green Building Initiatives
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 (264 reads)

Charlotte, NC/Lake Norman, NC -  TREK Bicycle Store of Charlotte is opening its doors just in time for holiday season shopping as the second Trek concept store to open in North Carolina. The store is the result of careful planning on multiple fronts to consider a variety of initiatives in conjunction with what the owners know works from more than 20 years in the bicycling retail arena. In the planning stages, it was important to local owners, Steve Doolittle, Chris Vasiloff, and Bruce Guild, that the store be designed with green in mind as well as incorporating family-friendly solutions balanced with what is important to cycling enthusiasts and athletes.

“We decided to make as many sustainable decisions as we possibly could from the onset of the design of the new location,” stated Steve Doolittle. “We found the orientation of the existing building structure of great appeal due to it creating a passive solar solution that enables us to minimize the heat gain in the summer while gaining heat in the winter when the sun is lower in the sky. The massive wall of windows on both sides provides the appeal desired for those looking into the store from the outside, while we were able to achieve energy efficiency and controls on the inside.”

Recession Passes by the Southern Christmas Show
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 (178 reads)

Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 18- - Sales and spirits are both looking very merry at the Southern Christmas Show, which opened last Thursday and runs through Sunday, November 23rd at the Charlotte Merchandise Mart (now named The Park).  According to the vendors we spoke with, show guests seem to be ignoring the bad tidings and arrive at the show ready to shop, and enjoy this 41st annual tradition.

Jolene Howard, who’s husband Max, creates one of a kind metal sculptures that range in price from $5 for an exquisite metal pussy willow, to $700 for a handsome wall hanging, admits she came to the show a little nervous. “It didn’t take long to decide things would be better than OK,” said Howard, “we’ve had to restock every day, sales have been outstanding.”

Kathy Rallis, partner in Leah & Co, a local boutique, has a shop in the show’s Old Town area.  She sells unique jewelry, bags, and gift items.  Rallis says she didn’t know what to expect, because sales had been soft at their retail store.  She, too, is thrilled with the response and with her sales at the show.

The most any of us can wish for is to leave this world a better place for our having been in it. Soon the world will know how 12-year-old Hope Stout left this world a better place when she died of cancer in 2003. Her inspirational story is the subject of a feature-length film to be shot in the Charlotte region during December and January.

The cameras will start rolling at Bank of America Stadium during the Panther’s home game Dec. 8. Hundreds of local crew members will be hired, including some who will film Charlotte streetscapes for the movie’s holiday segments. Filming will be on hiatus over the holidays, then the more dramatic segments will be shot in mid-January when production resumes. Pre-production, which has begun, editing and finishing all will be done in Charlotte. Joanne Hock, co-founder of Charlotte-based Emulsion Arts, has written the original script.
