APRIL 6, 2009 – The Pfeiffer University Wind Ensemble will perform a spring concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 in the Stokes Student Center Community Room on the Misenheimer campus. The band will perform a selection of familiar and new works. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Wind Ensemble, directed by Ed Kiefer, director of instrumental music at Pfeiffer, and assisted by David Kirby, associate professor of music, will present a concert of familiar and new works for band. The concert will feature works including Leonard Bernstein’s overture to “Candide” and Saint Saens’ bacchanale from “Samson and Delilah.”
Other pieces include Percy Grainger’s settings of “Irish Tune from County Derry” (a tune also known as “Londonderry Air” or “Danny Boy”) and "Shepherd's Hey," a Traditional English Morris Dance. Kirby will be clarinet soloist on Weber’s “Polocca,” the finale of the Second Clarinet Concerto. The ensemble will also perform "The Big Cage," a Circus Galop by Karl King, and "Festive Overture" by Russian Composer Dmitri Shostakovich, in a famous transcription by Donald Hunsberger.
The Pfeiffer Wind Ensemble’s reputation as the premiere band in the region continues to grow. Attend the performance by these talented student musicians, who will play in a new venue that offers pleasing acoustics and is more accessible to the public.
